A Brief History of Ireland

Ireland’s story dates back thousands of years and includes prehistoric monuments, Celtic tribes, Viking settlements, and even medieval kingdoms.

Dublin began as a Viking settlement around 800 AD and grew into one of Europe’s most important trading centers. The city’s official Irish name is Baile Atha Cliath, meaning “Town of the Hurdled Ford”, while the English name Dublin comes from the Irish word Dubhlinn, meaning “Black Pool.

Following centuries of British rule, most of Ireland gained independence in 1922, eventually becoming the Republic of Ireland. Today, Ireland is a modern and thriving nation that proudly celebrates its unique heritage, traditions, and culture.

Irish culture is famous worldwide for its storytelling, music and dance, and sense of community. Between May and September, temperatures typically range from the upper 50s to the low 70s °F (14-22 °C), creating comfortable conditions for sightseeing, walking tours, and outdoor activities.

Ireland’s weather is famously unpredictable. It’s not uncommon to experience sunshine, clouds, wind, and light rain all in the same day. Because of this, layering is the key to staying comfortable throughout your trip.
